Brewers 8, Mets 6 (Game 50)

I feel compelled to touch upon a serious question for fellow Met fans (feel free to reply and answer below)...

Q: If Jerry Manuel were managing the Phillies tonight - would he have left Roy Halladay in the game for the 9th inning to finish the perfecto? Or would he instead go to Jose Contreras due to Halladay's 100 or so pitch count? I wonder. I really do. Seriously.

Now, where to begin tonight? Hmm, Jerry Manuel? Perhaps? Here are reactions to the typical moves found in "The Book of Jerry - How To Lose A Game."

Manuel has worn thin his bullpen in these first two months. So, brilliantly he decided that it was a great idea to start his only legitimate 8th inning guy (as last night we learned Feliciano is only a lefty specialist - or, wait, is he? I don't remember anymore.) Then, without fail, THE PITCH COUNT. What if in some alternate universe, Fernando Nieve had gone through 7 perfect innings in 80 pitches - well, maybe 5, because aside from Pelfrey and Santana, no Met can even dream of that pitch count that late - would Nieve be pulled?

I think he would. I really do. The point is - his decisions are made perhaps purely on some statistical formula that he created to gauge his pitchers? I don't know, you tell me.

Anyway, to top it, Oliver Perez in long relief??? In a game WE COULD WIN? Really, Jerry? What ever happened to Raul Valdez - the guy that made you not get utterly crucified by the media with his wonderful performance in D.C. a little while back. This move cements my stance that Jerry has a stick so far up his a** that it's reached his noggin and given him brain cancer.

What's worst of all? Jerry Manuel has no urgency. If the Mets clubhouse were on fire he would likely consult Dan Warthen to "evaluate the situation" to decide if it was a wise idea to leave. There was no urgency to win this game whatsoever - and for the worst road team in baseball playing lowly Milwaukee (the worst home team in baseball) that's purely unacceptable.

By the way, the Mets have horrendous pitch selection (i.e. Jason Bay making a bases loaded 2-0 count look like an 0-2 count.)

  1. Jerry is ridiculous..and honestly if he were the phillies manager i don't think he would have allowed halliday to pitch the 9th lol. I really wanted to knock him out last night taking johan out! Halliday's perfect game was like a punch in the face to mets fans..But hopefully Dickey can avoid the sweep..Let's go mets!
