The route to get there? Slightly different and less controversial. Of course, I was only kidding in my comparison.
That said, Jonathon Niese was brilliant tonight. Absolutely brilliant. He wasn't overpowering, but he worked fast and was in complete control from start to finish. He dealt strike after strike, resulting in a fair number of strikeouts and a lot of weak contact.
Neise's gem is hands down the best performance of 2010 by a Met starter. Not only that, it's also the first Mets complete game one-hitter since Aaron Heilman back in April of 2005.
If not for the timing of the lone hit in this game, it could be argued that this is as close to a perfecto as a Met has come in a long time. But, when you allow your first and only hit in the 3rd inning, the pressure that would have built in the 5th, 6th and so on is alleviated. On the other hand, if the end result is indicative of how close you came to perfection, then there's nothing closer than one off the mark.
Regardless of just how great this performance was, there is one thing that is certain. It was, well, some sort of great.
Grats' Jon.
