The Stopper - Pelfrey Brilliant in 4-2 Win

I wrote earlier today that Mike Pelfrey is the ultimate stopper citing the fact that coming into tonight the Mets were a perfect 5-0 when he took the mound following a loss. If you were wondering what the mark of an ace pitcher is, look no further than that. When a team is reeling (and the Mets most certainly were in the wake of an 18-6 pounding during a 1-3 roadtrip) you need a guy who the team, fans, and organization have the utmost confidence in to stop the bleeding. Mike Pelfrey is that guy.

When the Mets desperately needed a great performance, he delivered. And thensome. Season highs 8 innings and 8 strikeouts, just 4 hits and a lonely run. He was in control from start to finish and I can't say enough good things about the guy. He has been the MVP of the pitching staff, an all-star, and if not for Ubaldo Jiminez, a legitimate Cy Young candidate.

The 26 year old righty moves to 8-1 on the year with a 2.39 ERA. He improves to 5-0 in starts after his team has suffered a loss. The team improves to 6-0. Say hello the ace of the future. Make that, the ace of now.

-Tom Greenhalgh (a very early 6/2/10)

P.S. K-Rod,

Would you please do us all a favor and make something easy for once? You're doing wonders to draw comparisons to the likes of Armando Benitez, Braden Looper....I would continue but it pains me so.

Silly me, though. I forgot that I was supposed to "chill" because "you got this."

(THANKS FOR THE HEART ATTACK JACK***)

more to come....
